Two people were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision on Route 6 in Meshoppen Township near the entrance to the Wyoming County Fairgrounds and about two miles west of Meshoppen Borough.
According to state police at Tunkhannock, the three-vehicle crash occurred around 2 p.m., causing the road to be closed for three hours. Names of the deceased were not released pending notification of next of kin.
According to police, a 1998 Ford Taurus was traveling west on Route 6 when a 1999 Chevrolet van crossed over into the westbound lane and sideswiped a truck and trailer before striking the Taurus head-on.
The driver of the van, a 76-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene by Wyoming County chief deputy coroner Eric Kukuchka. A passenger in the van, a 73-year-old woman, was pronounced dead later at CMC Hospital, Scranton. Both deceased are female, police said.
Occupants of both vehicles were life-flighted or transported by ambulance to CMC, Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, and Tyler Hospital, Tunkhannock.
The driver of the Taurus, a 46-year-old male, received serious injuries, as did a 27-year-old female passenger in the front seat, police said. Three children riding in the rear seat were also injured – two females, ages 6 and 1; and a male, 4.
