Photo ID leads to suspect in robbery

KINGSTON – Police arrested a Wilkes-Barre man Thursday after a Luzerne County probation officer allegedly recognized his photo from a store robbery.

Police allege Harold Leland Terry, 20, of Laurel Street, entered the Sunoco A-Plus service station on South Wyoming Avenue on Nov. 7 and asked a clerk for change. When the clerk opened the register, Terry allegedly reached across the counter, grabbed money and ran out of the store.

Police said the probation officer recognized Terry from a surveillance photo of the robbery.

Terry was charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy. He was arraigned by District Judge Paul J. Roberts Jr. in Kingston on Thursday afternoon and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $35,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

Terry entered the Sunoco at about 11:45 p.m. and asked for four quarters in exchange for a $1 bill. He then ran out of the store with money he grabbed from the register.

Terry ran across Wyoming Avenue and was encountered by a witness, Ali Eid, on Northampton Street. Eid had seen Terry run out of the store and the clerk chasing him.

Eid asked Terry if there was a problem. Terry replied he was fighting with his mother.

Terry got into a vehicle, with another person, that was parked near Lowe’s on Northampton Street in Edwardsville. Eid followed the vehicle to Market Street, where he lost sight of it as it drove across the Market Street Bridge at a high rate of speed.

Police said in the criminal complaint that Terry admitted to the robbery.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled on Nov. 25 before Roberts.
