LARKSVILLE – Police captured a man late Thursday night after a chase that began with an alleged attempted stabbing of his ex-girlfriend and her friend.
Edward McGrady, 48, of Miner Street, Plains Township, was charged with two counts of simple assault, and one count each of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and several traffic offenses. He was arraigned on Friday and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $25,000 bail.
According to the criminal complaint filed by officers Jason Zoshak and Jeffrey Gibson:
John O’Donnell and Michelle Nice told police that McGrady kicked in the rear door at Nice’s residence on Franklin Street just before 9 p.m. Thursday. McGrady assaulted Nice, his ex-girlfriend, and O’Donnell, who intervened.
McGrady grabbed a butcher knife from a cabinet in the kitchen and lunged at Nice and O’Donnell with the knife and missed.
McGrady smashed glass inside the residence and sped away in a red Mercury Tracer, which was spotted by Kingston police officer Thomas McTague at Thomas and Wilson streets in Larksville.
Police said McTague pursued McGrady on Pace and Wilson streets and Pheasant Drive at a high rate of speed, with McGrady passing through stop signs at intersections.
He abandoned his car at Pace and Church streets, where he got away by running between homes.
Police checked taverns in Larksville and Edwardsville for McGrady Thursday night. Police said they spotted him near Triple K. Saloon on Main Street, Edwardsville. McGrady ran away, and police captured him after a struggle.
McGrady told police that he was at his ex-girlfriend’s residence but did not mean to hurt her or her friend. He said he ran away from police because he was scared. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 8 before District Judge David Barilla, Swoyersville.
