Upsets big and small tonight

With absentee ballots counted but not yet certified, 29-year-old Republican challenger Stefanie Salavantis has toppled incumbent Luzerne County District Attorney Jackie Musto Carroll by 965 votes, with a total of 62,587 votes cast.

Salavantis mounted a vociferous - and costly - campaign that questioned Musto Carroll's conduct through the "kids for cash" scandal that tainted the Courthouse and resulted in the conviction of two judges.

On a smaller scale, Democratic two-time challenger Liz Martin prevailed against 55-year Supervisor Glenn Howell in Dallas Township. Martin leveraged concerns about the effect of gas drilling and pipelines on the township in her successful race.

All results are preliminary until certified, a process that takes a week or more.
