Sallie Mae supporters rally to save jobs

HANOVER TWP. – By the time the ripple effect of a possible Sallie Mae closing would hit Jerry Stewart’s business, it would be a good-sized wave.

Stewart, the owner of the Alden Manor complex in Newport Township, said he depends upon the Sallie Mae employees inside and outside of their workplace.

He attended a company rally Friday at Sallie Mae’s facility in the Hanover Industrial Estates at which employees delivered 31,603 signatures on petitions. The petitions were circulated to protect the 1,000 local jobs that could be lost under a proposal to have the federal government originate all federal student loans.
