DUPONT – Council on Tuesday appointed Joseph Timinski Jr. to fill a vacancy created by the death of his father in June.
Joseph Timinski Sr. had served as a Dupont borough councilman for more than 20 years, council president Stanley Knick noted in putting Timinski’s name forward for a unanimous vote.
Knick said that he had learned a great deal from Timinski’s father, and he expected his son would put forward the same level of dedication as his father had done.
Timinski will fill the vacancy until the next municipal election, which will take place November 2009, although the senior Timinski had most recently been elected to another four-year term last year.
Council will arrange a swearing-in date with District Judge Fred Pierantoni of Pittston, and should have Timinski seated by the August meeting.
In other business, council approved a shift of the police pension plan to Fidelity Bank in a move that should save the plan more than $15,000 in fees annually.
The previous plan administrators had charged approximately $20,000 in fees on the $830,000 fund each year.
Fidelity will continue to use the same records keepers, actuaries, and administrators as the previous managers did, bank representatives told council.
The only officer eligible for the pension is Chief Anthony DeMark, and although the fund would generate enough for his likely retirement costs, council members felt that the move was required on the grounds of proper fiscal management.
Council members also asked if DeMark could check contractors in the borough to ensure they had paid appropriate licensing fees.
Council member Edward Kowalczyk noted the revenue did not appear to be coming into the borough to reflect the amount of work he could see being done, and it could be worth the borough checking into whether or not a code enforcement officer was required.
