Cary Morgan, volunteer and educational director for the Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals of Luzerne County, believes these events are paramount to inform people that they can adopt animals from rescue organizations or the SPCA shelter.
Morgan said the shelter takes in and adopts out all different types of animals – dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, bunnies and reptiles.
She encouraged people to stop by the shelter at 524 E. Main St., also called Fox Hill Road, in Plains Township, to discuss getting a pet.
“It is a huge responsibility and we want people to be prepared for that,” Morgan said.
She said staff will talk to those interested in adopting to ensure they can have a pet in their home if they are renting a space, or if they are up to the task of caring long term for a pet if they are homeowners.
“One of the biggest reasons animals are surrendered, next to moving and allergies, is a landlord or parents won’t allow them,” she said.
The SPCA had bunnies, cats and dogs on display Saturday in the showroom trying to find them permanent loving homes, just in time for Christmas.
Mary Anthony, general manager of the dealership, said this is the third time in recent years the dealership has opened its doors to support finding homes for animals.
“A lot of the Kia and Subaru owners are pet owners, and there are a lot of animals that need homes,” Anthony said.
4 Paws Spay and Neuter organization had a booth to inform people of the importance of getting their animals spayed and neutered to control animal population levels.
The organization provides low-income people who qualify with gift certificates to be utilized at certain veterinarians to cover most of the costs of spaying and neutering, said Secretary/Treasurer Rita Warabak of Pittston.
There are three more chances for people to get their furry friends to Santa: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 12 and 19 at the SPCA in Plains Township and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 20 at PetSmart at Arena Hub Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township.
