PITTSTON TWP. – The township supervisors Monday night approved a storm water management ordinance that must be accepted by April 3.

Supervisor Steve Rinaldi asked before the vote about the ordinance because of its complexities. Rinaldi wanted to know if it would be beneficial to the township.

“If it is good for the township, let’s get this done,” he said.

Supervisors reached a tentative agreement with Petroleum Products regarding mercantile taxes owed to the township. There was a mix-up regarding the amount of taxes owed and with the efforts of township solicitor John P. Finnerty, the township and Petroleum Products reached an agreement and the matter is settled. This was done in an effort to collect all legally imposed delinquent taxes on mercantile, billboard and sign taxes owed to the township.

Residents of Mill and Center streets voiced their concerns about a tap-in maintenance sewer bill that they received from Pittston city. Rinaldi assured the residents township officials were working out the issue with the city and are moving to resolve the issue where the residents will only pay a sewer bill to the township.

In other matters, officials reached agreement in principle on the Shoppel Easement, which will allow emergency vehicles access to the upper part of Cork Lane.

The problem is when trains stop on the tracks, they block access to the section of the township. However, access is now granted through Broad Street with the agreement with Charles Shoppel, who owns the property.

Rinaldi also said he wants to implement an emergency food assistance program, if there is a need. Residents are encouraged to call Debbie at the municipal building between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 654-0161. All inquiries will be completely confidential.

Supervisor Joseph Adams reminded residents of the ordinance prohibiting the placement of any portable basketball goal or stand on any township-owned roadway, which was formally adopted Monday night.

This ordinance is in effect from Nov. 1 through March 31.

Adams also reminded residents that a representative from state Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich’s office will be at the municipal building the third Thursday of each month to review comments and complaints of any resident concerns.
