Two die during rescue

NORTH ABINGTON TWP. – Two men died while trying to rescue a girl and a woman who fell through ice on a pond just north of Scranton on Saturday afternoon.

Willard Van Fleet Jr., 36, of Factoryville, died in the water, and Mark Keene, 55, of Dalton, suffered an apparent heart attack during the rescue, according to Lackawanna County Deputy Coroner Joseph Swoboda.

Keene, who did not fall into the water, was pronounced dead at 1:41 p.m. at Community Medical Center in Scranton, Swoboda said.

Waverly police are investigating. State police at Dunmore assisted.

No further information was made available as of late Saturday.
