Yatesville gets $25,000 grant for path to bocci court, other park work

YATESVILLE – Borough officials on Wednesday confirmed the receipt of a $25,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant that will be used to create a concrete path to the borough’s bocci courts, as well to do as other work in the park.

The courts are used on weekends by area Special Olympics players and are reached by crossing the grass from the parking lot.

That makes access difficult for those in wheelchairs, so the borough started looking for financial aid to pay for a path several months ago.

The work is scheduled to be done Saturday, weather permitting, said council member Gene Cardoni.

The work the borough had done in opening the courts to the Special Olympics players was noted in a plaque awarded to the borough and the bocci league during the meeting.

Luzerne County Special Olympics thanked the borough and the league for the chance that they have given the players.

The bocci league members have been actively involved in helping the Special Olympics teams, Mayor Joe Chiumento said.

In other business, council named Chiumento and Cardoni to represent the borough at future meetings of a combined Laflin-Pittston City cooperative committee.

Laflin council members had expressed an interest in having Yatesville representatives at future meetings to discuss possible cooperative efforts because the two boroughs already have a number of cooperative agreements, including for police services.

Yatesville solicitor Samuel Falcone, who is also a solicitor for Pittston, said the presence at any possible future meetings would give the borough an opportunity to examine shared grant and purchasing opportunities, as well as future cost savings.

No details have been worked out as to what any shared agreements would entail, and no meeting dates for the representatives of the three municipalities have yet been set, council noted.
