(AP) A key House GOP lawmaker says the Internal Revenue Service continued to target conservative political groups even after approving their applications for tax exempt status.

The IRS acknowledged in May that agents had improperly targeted tea party groups for additional, sometimes burdensome scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.

Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana said Wednesday that conservative groups were also subjected to special scrutiny even after their applications were approved. Speaking at a congressional hearing, Boustany said the groups were subjected to special monitoring at a much higher rate than their liberal counterparts.

Boustany chairs the House Ways and Means oversight subcommittee. The committee launched an investigation after the IRS revelations were made public. Committee staff has interviewed 25 IRS officials and is reviewing about 300,000 IRS documents.
