(AP) The federal government says it hired the highest percentage of military veterans in more than two decades in fiscal year 2012, with veterans making up about 29 percent of the 195,000 new employees.

The percentage of veterans within the federal workforce has been on a gradual upswing in recent years.

The Defense Department led the way with about 46 percent of new hires being veterans. Veterans made up nearly 35 percent of new hires at the Social Security Administration, and also more than a third of the new hires at the Veterans Affairs and Transportation departments.

Meanwhile, veterans made up about 8 percent of new hires at the Agriculture Department and about 7.3 percent at Health and Human Services.
