(AP) Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, are commemorating their three-decade-long relationship with Habitat for Humanity by wielding hammers and saws in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Carters are scheduled to spend Monday working on a new Habitat-built townhome development in East Oakland, where the international nonprofit already has built or repaired 115 homes.
They are expected to be joined by hundreds of volunteers, and country singers Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks. A private presidential reception Monday night will be used to raise money for Habitat's East Bay/Silicon Valley chapter.
On Tuesday, the former president and first lady are scheduled to help renovate homes in San Jose.
The difficult conditions facing residents of the Oakland neighborhood the Carters will be visiting was highlighted last week when volunteers at the townhome construction site were robbed at gunpoint.
