(AP) Lawrence Wright's investigation of Scientology and George Packer's bleak account of modern American life were among the 10 books chosen for the nonfiction long-list of the National Book Awards.

Other nominees included Terry Teachout's biography of Duke Ellington and a pair of books about slavery, by Alan Taylor and by James Oakes. The National Book Foundation, which presents the awards, announced the nonfiction picks Wednesday. In an effort to increase awareness of the awards, the foundation has introduced long-lists this year and is announcing the four competitive categories over four days. The fourth and final category, fiction, will be revealed Thursday.

Nominees will be reduced to short-lists of five each next month, and winners will be announced Nov. 20 in New York City.
