(AP) Leonardo Haberkorn, a prize-winning investigative journalist, has been named a correspondent for The Associated Press in Montevideo, Uruguay.

His appointment was announced Friday by Marjorie Miller, the AP's editor for Latin America and the Caribbean, based in Mexico City.

"Haberkorn has a well-established reputation as one of Uruguay's top journalists. We are very pleased to welcome him to the AP and look forward to his smart coverage of the country," Miller said.

Haberkorn will report to Michael Warren, the AP's Southern Cone bureau chief, and Alejandro Manrique, who directs the news agency's Spanish service.

A native of Montevideo and graduate of the Catholic University of Uruguay, Haberkorn, 49, has been a writer and editor at many of the country's leading newspapers and news magazines, as well as a radio commentator, TV producer and a lively blogger. He reported for the Reuters news agency, then the Uruguayan weekly "Busqueda," and then served as political editor at the daily "El Pais," where he created and led the newspaper's investigative weekly, "Que Pasa."

Haberkorn has taught journalism at Uruguay's ORT university. He also has published nine books, including anthologies, books for children, books about football and historical investigations such as "Historias Tupamaras" (2008) and "Milicos y Tupas" (2011), which won the Uruguayan book chamber's national nonfiction gold prize for challenging myths about the country's leftist Tupamaro guerrilla movement and 1973-1985 military dictatorship.
