With the start of NFL training camp set for the end of the month, Payton says he was planning to spend a week relaxing at The Greenbrier resort. One thing led to another, and Payton ended up agreeing to help Palmer, who gave his regular caddie the week off.

Payton says after two days of carrying Palmer's clubs during practice rounds and pro-am events, he's realized "this isn't a vacation."

Payton compares being a caddie to visualizing an NFL game through the eyes of a quarterback and says he's taking the opportunity seriously.

The tournament starts Thursday in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
