DALLAS– The Pauly Friedman Art Gallery at Misericordia University will present “Capturing Realism 2013” a biennial exhibit of works instructors, alumni and apprentices from the nationally renowned studios of the Ani Art Academies and acclaimed modern master Anthony J. Waichulis. The installation will be on display Sept. 7 through Oct. 31.

The exhibit will open with a Meet the Artists Reception on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery. The Pauly Friedman Art Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.

The juried show will feature selected art from the Ani Art Academies Waichulis atelier, Bear Creek Twp., Pa.; the Ani Art Academies Anguilla, on the Caribbean island of Anguilla; and the Ani Art Academies Dominicana, on the island of the Dominican Republic.

The biennial exhibit began in 1998 and returns to Misericordia every two years to offer a select expose of realist endeavors including still life, Trompe - L’oeil, landscape, portrait, and figure renderings in graphite, charcoal and oil. This is the first time it will have a global flavor, including artists from all three academies.

“When we held our first exhibit in 1998, we only had a small group of artists and we easily fit into the space at Misericordia,” explains Waichulis. “Now that we have over 20 artists in each of the three schools around the globe, we decided to make this a juried show, and select the items for exhibit so to provide the most rich and diverse representation of the work being done at all three academies.”

Waichulis is a native of Nanticoke, Pa., graduated from Luzerne County Community College, and completed his formal art studies at Schuler School of Fine Arts in Maryland. He has an international reputation for his Trompe L’oeil paintings, which are highly prized by knowledgeable collectors worldwide. They have been on display in many of the most respected venues, including the Arnot Art Museum, The Washington Museum of Fine Arts, The Smithsonian Institute, The Midwest Museum of American Art and the Orlando Museum of Art.

His works have also appeared in such magazines as The Artist’s Magazine, American Art Collection and Fine Art Connoisseur. In 2006, he became the first Trompe L’oeil painter to be granted Living Master status by the Art Renewal Center.

Most recently, his work was part of a historically significant, six-city national museum tour of “American Realist Painting in China” exhibit. The highly acclaimed exhibition featured works of the top realism painters in America was the first tour of contemporary American realism in China. It opened in the World Art Museum in Bejing in 2012.

Waichulis’ teaching career was launched in 1997, when he returned to his hometown and founded The Waichulis Studio. The atelier provided training to many who have gone on to the forefront of the art world, earning prestigious awards and placement in national exhibits and publications.

In 2010, The Waichulis Studio merged with the newly formed Ani Art Academies, the brainchild of Tim Reynolds, co-founder of a Wall Street trading firm and patron of the arts, to offer art education on a global level. The Ani Art Academy Waichulis was established and was joined by the Ani Art Academies Anguilla in 2012 and Ani Art Academies Dominicana in 2013. Academies are expected to open soon in Thailand and Sri Lanka.

“With each of these artists a metamorphosis takes place and it is so rewarding to see how they develop their talent,” Waichulis adds. “I am totally blown away by what these artists, some of them just kids, have produced.”

In addition to head instructor Waichulis, participating artists from the Ani Art Academies Waichulis will include Jason Brady, Dallas, Pa.; Helen Crispino, Dalton Pa.; Jay Davenport, Jim Thorpe Pa.; Rodney O’Dell Davis, West Pittston Pa.; Joseph Dillon, Nanticoke Pa.; Brandon D.
