Bloomsburg- Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble (BTE) will open its 36th Season with an original adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The play is adapted and directed by Ensemble Member Andrew Hubatsek, and will be presented as part of BTE’s Project Discovery, which provides free and reduced-price admission to high school students in surrounding areas.

Public performances will occur October 3 through 20, 2013, with student matinees scheduled for October 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th and 17th at 10 a.m. A complete performance calendar is available at www.bte.org.

Thanks in part to an NEA/Arts Midwest Grant, BTE will also offer supplemental educational workshops in stage combat, analyzing the text, and more, to help the students connect with the art. An electronic study guide will also be available online for students and audiences to familiarize themselves with Shakespeare and The Merchant of Venice before they come see the show.

The Merchant of Venice features Ensemble Member James Goode as the titular Antonio; frequent guest actor and Associate Ensemble Member Tom Byrn as Shylock; and frequent guest actor and 2013 Princess Grace Award Grantee Aaron White as Bassanio. Ensemble Members Daniel Roth (Gratiano), Richard Cannaday (Lancelot), Cassandra Pisieczko (Portia), and Elizabeth Dowd (Nerissa) round out the cast, joined by BTE Affiliated Artist Samantha Norton (Venice), 2013/2014 Ensemble Interns Philip Czeckner (Lorenzo) and Sophie Schulman (Jessica).

The Merchant of Venice is sponsored by the NEA/Arts Midwest Shakespeare in American Communities initiative, as well as Service First Credit Union, and by BTE’s 36th Season Sponsors: WNEP, WHLM, Press Enterprise, Innotek, ViaMedia, and CCN Productions.
