A new music festival will soon take its place among summer’s local events. This year, from August 30-September 1, at Lazy Brook Park in Tunkhannock, the Cornstock Acoustic Music Fest marks its inaugural jamboree, providing three days of concert performances, workshops in music, campfire jamming and campground relaxation.
The festival will feature honored guest, James Hannigan, hailed to be the“Pioneer” of the bluegrass music culture in NEPA.
With over forty hours of PA’s homegrown acoustic music, the festival features twenty-two bands on two stages, including international touring bluegrass band Hickory Project; regional favorites Coal Town Rounders, Garcia Grass, Old Friends, Bog Swing Group, Tumbleweed Highway and Colebrook Road; NYC’s country-jazz band, Honeyfingers, as well as many other musical acts, the festival offers something for everyone in acoustic entertainment.
The Cornstock Acoustic Music Fest will provide a special focus on music education, with various workshops guided by experts on mandolin, swing guitar, bluegrass guitar, “slap” guitar, banjo, music therapy, swing violin, bluegrass fiddle, old-time music, songwriting, bluegrass jamming, bluegrass bass, harmony singing, and more. The festival also emphasizes family, with all kids 16 and under admitted free. There will be kids’ concerts, hands-on kids’ crafts, as well as an array of music activities children of all ages can enjoy.
Attendees can also participate in outdoor activities, such as floating down the crystal-clear Tunkhannock creek, walking along landscaped trails, fishing, swimming or enjoying the morning yoga workshop. Or, they may choose to simply relax at the many campfire jams with fellow acoustic music lovers.
According to an event media release, “Cornstock was founded to preserve acoustic music, the greenest form of music. In this modern day of seemingly endless ‘screen time,’ it is important to get away from all the gadgets. No plugs or chargers are needed to create hours of fun and enjoyment. Cornstock is a time to come together with kindred acoustic music lovers and players for a truly organic musical experience. We invite folks to come celebrate the universal language of music, kinship, and good times. Join us!”
