The headlines tell us of terrorists, political corruption, and workers not getting paid a living wage while employers make billions in profits every year. Is it because of these frustrations that we have lost our common decency?

Increasingly, there are stories of people acting badly seemingly just for fun. Black actress Leslie Jones received lots of racist tweets all because she starred in the new Ghostbusters movie. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump runs around insulting parents of war heroes, calling women dogs and pigs, mocking a disabled reporter, and calling all Mexicans criminals.

Believe it or not, when former Major League Baseball player Curt Schilling congratulated his daughter via Twitter last year for making the college softball team, he got comments from a few guys saying that they can’t wait to rape her.

These actions should not be tolerated by anyone with any shred of human decency. We need to stop hating each other and get back to the values that the Bible teaches about respect and compassion.

You don’t need to agree with everyone, or even like everyone, but we need to find a way to disagree without ripping each other apart. Our country needs to be a place where compromise is not a dirty word. We need more “what would Jesus do” and less “what would Trump do?” More love and less hate. More compassion and less contempt.

It is time to stand up and reject this bad behavior. The First Amendment is not a challenge to see how vile and disgusting we can become.

Let’s remind them of the values that this country has held dear for many, many generations. I think the Bible sums it up nicely with the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12). “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
