A woman has a happy, cheerful voice and while working in her husband’s
trucking-line office she answered a phone call from a trucker asking for
directions to the terminal. After a short conversation he said he could hardly
wait to meet here.
    “I just know you are small, blond with blue eyes,” he said.
   
“No,” she replied, “I’m tall, brunette and have brown eyes.”
   
“Close enough!,” said the trucker.

The Carverton United Methodist Women will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April
16. President Nita Moser will host the session.

The Dorcas Society of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown, will hold a
Rummage/Bake Sale from 9 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
   
St. Paul’s Brotherhood will host their Roast Beef Dinner on April 27 with
takeouts from 4 to 4:30 p.m. and serving from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are
$6.50/adults; $3/children under 12 and are available from Brotherhood members
or at the door the night of the dinner.

The annual Spring Luncheon held to benefit the Back Mountain Memorial
Library is set for Thursday, April 25 at the Apple Tree Terrace, Newberry
Estate, Dallas. A social period will begin at 11:30 and the luncheon and
program at noon. The speaker will be June Nelson of Kingston, a poet, author
and playwright who will read from her works. For more information, call the

A Rummage Sale sponsored by the Dallas United Methodist Women will be held
at the church, Parsonage and Church Streets, from 9 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April
19 and from 9 to noon Saturday the 20th (Bag Day). A Bake Sale and snack bar
will be available.

The Dymond Hollow U.M. Church will be the place to go for a Ham Supper on
April 20 with serving beginning at 4 p.m. Takeouts available. Menu will
include scalloped potatoes, down-home green beans, creamed cabbage, pickled
beets, applesauce, cole slaw, homemade rolls and pies, coffee, tea or fruit
drink. For details, call 388-6566 or 333-4332. Cost is $6/adults, $3/children;
pre-schoolers are free.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre at Lehman, Great Books at Hayfield, will present
“Caesar and Cleopatra” by George Bernard Shaw, Monday beginning with a buffet
at 6 p.m. in the Hayfield House Community Room, H-105, Discussion will be led
by George Powell. All are welcome to attend.

The GFWC Northeastern Club, a non-profit women’s club, will hold a Flea
Market from 8 to 3 p.m. on April 20 at the Dorranceton U.M. Church, Wyoming
Avenue, Kingston. They will feature homemade breakfast and lunch items such as
cinnamon rolls and muffins, halushki, pizza, wimpies, hot dogs, lollipops,
baked goods. Crafters are welcome and flea market items, books, antiques,
collectibles and more will be available. All Club proceeds benefit local
charities. The Club meets the 4th Monday of the month. For more details, call

The Women’s Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth,
will hold its annual Bingo and Card Party, 2 p.m., on April 21 in the Parish
Hall. Refreshments and door prizes available. Players are asked to bring their
own cards.

The Shavertown Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Welsh Cookie Sale on April 21
with orders due by April 17. Pick-up will be 2 p.m. at the Fire Hall. Call any
Auxiliary member or 675-1881 to place an order.
   
Also, the Ladies are having a Bake/Hoagie Sale on Election Day, April 23 at
the Fire Hall. Hoagie orders are due by the 17th. Phone 675-4514.

The S.P.C.A. Pet of the Week is all 8-year old sheperd mix dog, black and
tan, housebroken, and her name is “Tigger.” She came to the Shelter with
puppies, which have all been adopted. She, too, needs a good home. Can you
help? Just call the Shelter at 825-4111. They have lots of pets there.

Deadline for the Good Time Travelers May 20-24 trip to New England to visit
Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine is Monday. A tour guide has many treats in
store for you to enjoy. Also, the deadline is now for their June 15 trip to
the Mt. Haven Resort to enjoy delicious food and the Best of Broadway. To make
reservations, you can call 288-9459, ask for Marion.

A special community program will be offered for all Scouts, ages 8 to 13,
at Frances Slocum State Park from 9 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. Themes will
include birds, trees, habitats and species of special concern. This program is
filled with activities designed to meet partial requirements for
environmentally oriented scout badges and awards.
   
For more information and to register for the program, please call the Park
office weekdays from 8 to 4 p.m. at 696-3525 and ask for Jerry. Registration
is ongoing until Friday, April 26.
   
Also, they’re having an Earth Day Workout at Slocum! The Park is asking for
assistance in its annual spring cleaning. Every year during Earth Week,
interested groups and dedicated individuals come out to the Park to aid the
beautification of Frances Slocum. If you are interested in doing a part to
enhance the environment this Earth Week, please join them for their
activities. All interested parties are asked to meet at the park office on
April 28 at noon.

~The Trustees of Trucksville U.M. Church will serve their spring Chicken
Barbecue on May 3 and 4 in the Fellowship Hall of the Educational Facilities
on Church Road in Trucksville. The meal will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. ~
Takeout orders begin at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available from any Trustee or at
the Church Office, 696-3897, and they go on sale Monday. Charge is $6/adults
and $3/children. Co-chairpersons are C. Edward Johnson and George Gaylord.

The Back Mountain Kiwanis Club will hold its semi-annual Spaghetti Dinner
at the Shavertown U.M. Church on April 27. Art Parks is chairman, assisted by
