MANSFIELD — The onslaught of hits followed by a steady stream of runs was no accident.

Nanticoke isn’t messing around in the Pennsylvania American Legion Region 5 Tournament.

Mike Blazaskie hammered a home run and led a trio of his teammates who ripped three hits Saturday as Nanticoke opened regionals by blasting Berwick, 16-0, in a scheduled nine-inning game shorted to seven innings by the mercy rule at Mansfield High School.

“It sends a message to other teams,” said Blazaskie, who finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI. “We’re here to take it all. We’re trying to get every game we play.”

The Nanticoke offense got to Berwick early and often, banging out all 18 of its hits in the first five innings.

Nick Deno drilled the first of his two doubles to open the second inning, and Blazaskie later brought him home with a single, triggering a four-run rally that ended with Christian Pack’s bases-loaded, two-run single to center.

“All season, I’ve been struggling with the bat in Legion,” Blazaskie said. “I went to see a trainer I work with, he picked up something I was doing with my swing. I corrected that. I’m getting short (with his swing) with the ball.

“I’ve been turning it up in the playoffs.”

In the third inning, Blazaskie turned on one, sending a rocket over the right field wall for a 5-0 Nanticoke lead.

“Very exciting,” said Blazaskie, who joined most of his Nanticoke Legion teammates on a powerhouse Hanover Area team that went unbeaten through the Wyoming Valley Conference Division II during the past four seasons.

Cleanup hitter Deno delivered two more Nanticoke runs with another double in the fourth inning. And with a 7-0 advantage in the fourth inning, Nanticoke had pretty much assured itself of a 3 p.m. game against Canton today at Mansfield University’s Shaute Field in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

And Berwick was headed back to Mansfield High School’s Kelly Field for a 9 a.m. game today in the losers bracket against either South Scranton. But if there was any lingering doubt about the outcome of Saturday’s opener, Nanticoke erased it with a nine-run fifth inning that featured two-run singles from Zach White and Mike Sulcoski and a two-run double by Eric Grzynski.

“If we swing the bats like that, we can beat anybody,” Nanticoke manager Joe Yudichak said. “Of course, that’s not going to happen all the time. We came out focused today. We were very patient. That’s a good lefthander against us, he’s won a ton of games this year.”

While Berwick starter Alex Klinger struggled to cool down Nanticoke’s torrid attack, Nanticoke ace John Wickiser allowed just three hits - one a bad-hop single - and struck out four through five scoreless innings to earn the victory.

Grzynski, the hero of Northwest High School’s District 2 Class 2A playoff team, finished up by pitching two hitless innings and finished 2-for-2 at the plate.

No. 2 hitter Pack, cleanup man Deno and No. 6 hitter Blazaskie all had three hits and combined for eight RBI and seven runs scored. White added three RBI, while Sulcoski drove home two runs and scored twice and Mike Bugnowicz scored twice.

All of Nanticoke’s 10 position players scored at least one run, and nine of them had at least one hit.

“Once we kept scoring, everybody just kept pitching in,” Blazaskie said. “Kind of surprising, how many runs we did get in the regional tournament. Berwick’s a good team. We knew we had to come out and swing the bats.”
