Although Hazleton Area and Berwick didn’t win any team championships this
season, they have the most wrestlers still alive of any Wyoming Valley
Conference Class AAA school in the quest for a state title.

The Cougars have six wrestlers left and the Bulldogs have five in today’s
Northeast Regional Class AAA championships at Bethlehem Liberty High School.
Wrestling will start at 9 a.m., with the first-round consolations at 11
a.m. Semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the second-round
consolations. Consolation finals will begin at 6 p.m., with the championship
finals at 7:30.

The top three finishers from each weight class will advance to the state
championships, March 9-11 at Hersheypark Arena.

The Cougars will be led by District 2 and Northeast Pre-Regional champions
Mike Weston (103) and Brian Olenek (130). Other Cougars in today’s tourney
will be Craig Kassick, Jason Hasker, Jay Kotsko and Dave Shafer.

The Bulldogs’ five survivors include Jamie Cary (103), Tyson Bohl (112),
Brent Yates (119), Jesse Johnson (135) and Robert Welch (heavyweight).

Pittston Area’s Tony Barbrie is coming off a big victory in last week’s
pre-regional final over Williamsport’s Matt Mapes at 152. Mapes was ranked No.
2 in the state, but lost a 5-3 overtime decision to Barbrie.

Coughlin’s Corey Luce has posted a 29-0 record this season en route to the
District 2 and Northeast Pre-Regional titles. Luce narrowly missed qualifying
for the state meet last season.

Wyoming Valley West’s Rob Trotter and Steve Williams have prospered during
the postseason. Both have won District 2 and Pre-Regional championships,
Trotter at 119 and Williams at 145.

Crestwood’s Bill Langin, who finished fourth in last year’s AA regional,
has also been tough during the last two weeks at heavyweight. After being
slowed by a midseason injury, Langin is healthy once again and looking for a
berth in the state tournament.

Other WVC competitors in today’s tourney will be Coughlin’s Dave Rohrbach
(171) and Jamie Sperrazza (145), Tunkhannock’s Joe Farber (189) and Wyoming
Valley West’s Josh Blockus (heavyweight).
