Sadly, the April 16 tragedy at Virginia Tech demonstrates how gun control laws fail to stop criminals and madmen while promoting unarmed, defenseless victims.
In 2006, Virginia rejected legislation that would have given qualified college employees and students the right to carry handguns on campus. Currently, only police have that right.
If a college employee or student had been lawfully armed and able to defend themselves, perhaps fewer victims may have fallen. Perhaps it would have ended as the 2002 shooting at Virginia’s Appalachian Law School did where the deranged gunman was reportedly stopped and held for police by two armed students who managed to retrieve their personal firearms from their vehicles when that shooting started.
Those who advocate gun control may believe they are making people safer, but they are depriving good, responsible citizens from their ability to defend themselves against criminals and psychopaths.
