Just to clarify some things if I may. I strongly believe the press has an obligation to inform the public as well as provide interesting reading. I know the Dispatch is a small paper and as such does not really report the hard news. The coverage Pittston Area receives by both the Times Leader and the Citizens voice is terrible. Most often, the Voice (Scranton Times) does not even show up.
I write my letters to the editor in an attempt to inform the public about what is going on at their school since the press is not doing it. If they seem political in nature, that I cannot control. This past Tuesday, the Board voted to rename the Hughestown athletic fields after Bucky Harris. That is great. My Dad wrote about Bucky Harris too. The Dispatch jumped on this Sunday making the individual who pushed for it look good. Some might say that is political. It frustrates me that renaming a park is a priority and newsworthy. Are you aware that Pittston Area Senior High School does not have computers in most of the classrooms?
Do you know that the High School Library is only open for student use 2 hrs and 15 minutes per week? Do you know that many if not most students have 2 study periods per day because our teachers have a contact, that was recently extended through 2012, that says they only have to teach five 45 minute classes per day? You should walk around the halls to see the number of young people sleeping instead of learning. Do you know that Pittston Area has put potentially millions of dollars at risk by leaving the NEPA Health Trust? Are you aware of the favoritism in the awarding of contracts?
These to me are newsworthy items and should be priorities of the Board. It’s nice to name a park after Bucky Harris but I believe the education of Pittston Area students is more important.
