SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Brittany Mallory scored 13 of her career-high 22 points as No. 3 Notre Dame quickly jumped to a 21-point lead en route to an 88-47 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday.
Mallory hit her first five shots, with her 3-pointer midway through the first half giving the Irish (9-0) a 29-8 lead.
The Crusaders (3-5), who lost their fifth straight, went on a 10-2 run to close to 33-20 on a three-point play by Raegan Moore with 6:12 left before intermission. But Valparaiso missed its last nine shots of the half and trailed 45-22 at halftime.
The Irish pulled away throughout the second half. Valparaiso had 29 turnovers and just six assists. Moore led the Crusaders with 16 points.
Penn State 77, No. 15 Pittsburgh 73
STATE COLLEGE — Tyra Grant had 27 points and Meredith Monroe added 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Penn State to a victory over No. 15 Pittsburgh.
Nikki Greene added 12 points for Penn State (7-3) in its first win over a ranked foe since beating No. 11 Duke two years ago.
Shayla Scott had 17 points and Sophronia Sallard added 15 for the previously undefeated Panthers (8-1).
Julia Trogele hit a 3-pointer with just over 7 minutes left to put Penn State up 55-52. Grant extended the lead with a three-point play after getting fouled on a layup.
Pitt cut the deficit to 65-64 with 2:52 left after a 3 by Scott, but the Nittany Lions responded with 3s from Zhaque Gray and Trogele over the next minute to go up by seven. Penn State hit five 3s over the final 10 minutes.
A back-and-forth first half featured six lead changes and five ties. Pitt’s largest lead came three minutes in when off bucket by Scott made it 8-2 before Grant and Alex Bentley scored a combined six points to tie the score.
No. 20 Dayton 84, Miami (Ohio) 75
OXFORD, Ohio — Kendel Ross scored a career-high 29 points and No. 20 Dayton rebounded from its first loss as a ranked team with a victory over Miami of Ohio.
Ross’ 3-pointer gave Dayton (9-2) its largest lead, 71-58 with 3:44 to play. Miami (1-8) was difficult to put away, but the Flyers kept their lead between eight and 12 points in the final minutes with free throws and layups against the RedHawks’ gambling defense.
Dayton, ranked for the first time two weeks ago, had its seven-game winning streak snapped at Toledo on Wednesday.
Dayton freshman Kari Daugherty also had a career high with 19 points off the bench. Center Casey Nance added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ross had 10 rebounds and Justine Raterman added 11 rebounds as Dayton dominated the boards 51-31.
The young RedHawks were led by freshman point guard Courtney Osborn’s 19 points.
