WILKES-BARRE — In the race for Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas judge,
Democratic candidate Mark Ciavarella has whipped Republican opponent Joseph
Yeager — at least in fund raising.

Between June 6 and Oct. 23, Ciavarella raised $224,975 to Yeager’s $43,960,
campaign expense reports show.
The last day to file the expense reports at the Luzerne County Courthouse
and in Harrisburg was Friday. Expense reports mailed to Harrisburg had to be
postmarked no later than Thursday night.

Ciavarella spent 62 percent, or $139,000, of his total contributions on
campaign commercials.

Yeager’s report accounted for only about $21,000 of expenditures, although
the report states than he spent a total of $42,645.

Of the $21,000, Yeager spent about $4,200 on advertising. The report
indicates that Yeager still owes almost $15,000 for radio and television
commercials.

Yeager received only $300 from political action committees, including a
$100 contribution from the Pennsylvania Gas and Water Co. committee. The bulk
of his contributions came from small businesses and individuals, including
numerous lawyers.

Ciavarella tapped a broad base of support that included lawyers, political
action committees, members of the Wilkes-Barre City Council and other
individuals.

Political committees that donated to Ciavarella include: PG&W, Friends of
Tom McGroarty, the unopposed candidate for Wilkes-Barre mayor; Friends of Tom
Leighton, the Wilkes-Barre City Council president; and Sheet Metal Workers
Local 44.
