Board eyes anti-porno deal
    The Wilkes-Barre Area School Board on Monday night discussed several
pending contracts, including one that would protect students from pornographic
material on the InternetThe board said it intends to recommend a 24-hour
Internet security system expected to cost $17,165 per year, to be funded by a
grant.
   
The service, from Northeast Micro of Wilkes-Barre, would protect students
from receipt of pornographic materials through school computers. The service
would be funded by a “Link-To-Learn III” grant.
   
Board member James Kelly noted the cost of the agreement and wondered why
it had not been put out for bid. Superintendent Jeffrey Namey said service
agreements are not required to be bid.
   
Namey assured members that other competent vendors had been examined. He
said that costs would be unending if the district bought and upgraded its own
software.
   
In other business:
   
A pending contract came under fire for Geo-Science Engineering Co. of
Jessup to provide soil, concrete, steel and asphalt testing services on the
Leo E. Solomon Educational Complex and Plains Memorial K-8 School field house.
   
The original agreement said that disputes relating to the performance of
services be resolved by the American Arbitration Association in Lackawanna
County.
   
Board solicitor Anthony Lupas said that in past rulings by the association,
the district often paid one-third more than the contract. Lupas advised that
any disputes should be resolved in Luzerne County Court.
   
The board decided that the agreement should be rewritten before formal
action is taken.
