SCRANTON - Several members of a group that operated an elaborate marijuana-growing ring were sentenced Monday in federal court.
Elisa Do, Hoan Nguyen, Manh Nguyen and Cuong Hong Tran were among 12 people who were charged in 2006 with participating in the ring, which authorities said grew thousands of marijuana plants inside 10 homes located in several counties.
Others charged in connection with the case included Tommy Nguyen, the owner of Tommy’s Nail Salon in Kingston. Tommy Nguyen pleaded guilty in August to manufacturing marijuana and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He is awaiting sentencing.
The charges stem from a raid conducted on numerous homes, including residences in Harveys Lake, West Nanticoke, Clarks Summit and Tobyhanna and Eaton Townships that were conducted by federal authorities in November 2006. All tolled more than 3,500 marijuana plants were seized, along with more than $230,000 in cash.
