Secret Service says "Kill him" allegation unfounded

By Andrew M. Seder aseder@timesleader.com
Times Leader Staff Writer

SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.

Loading...

The Scranton Times-Tribune first reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and then again in its print edition Wednesday. The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Obama’s name a man in the audience shouted “kill him."

News organizations including ABC, The Associated Press, The Washington Monthly and MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann reported the claim, with most attributing the allegations to the Times-Tribune story.

Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.

“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.

He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.

Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, from news media to ordinary citizens in attendance at the rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate held at the Riverfront Sports Complex. He said Singleton was the only one to say he heard someone yell “kill him.”

“We have yet to find someone to back up the story,” Slavoski said. “We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it.”

Hackett said he did not hear the remark.

Slavoski said Singleton was interviewed Wednesday and stood by his story but couldn’t give a description of the man because he didn’t see him he only heard him.

When contacted Wednesday afternoon, Singleton referred questions to Times-Tribune Metro Editor Jeff Sonderman. Sonderman said, “We stand by the story. The facts reported are true and that’s really all there is.”

Slavoski said the agents take such threats or comments seriously and immediately opened an investigation but after due diligence “as far as we’re concerned it’s closed unless someone comes forward.” He urged anyone with knowledge of the alleged incident to call him at 346-5781. “We’ll run at all leads,” he said.

So it's true because the reporter says it is, even though the Secret Service investigated and found no truth to it? This made national news WITH NO BASIS. What is the world coming to?

"we stand by our story?" so, despite the fact that more than 20+ people whose main job is to defend our elected officials did not hear the threat, we're to stand by what Singleton heard? And, of course, MSNBObama, gives it full billing to attack sen. McCain. Is it any wonder that this newspaper is going down the drain, subscriptions continue to drop, advertising continues to fall. Someone needs to leave a note on Sonderman and Singleton's desk: Last one out, turn out the lights.

I'm a lawyer for several newspapers. Suffice it to say, if the original story is typical reporting and editing by their paper, they'll not be in business much longer. At some point, such sloppiness (lack of corroboration; the reporter becoming the story) will cost them big. The jury pool is waiting to sock it to the media, punishing the "guilty" along w/ the innocent. The desire for revenge is palpable; and, for good cause, frankly. Someone needs to be punished. One of these days, it may be their turn.

Good job T.L.! This is why you guys are the best in the region. Thank you for calling The Times Tribune on this. I don't think The Times Tribune is worth the paper it's printed on. I find alot of thier stories to be slanted, and in some cases not very truthful. I found their three day report on the condition of PNC Field, and a need to possibly build a new one in downtown Scranton to be absurd, and I hoped you guys would give a (truthful) follow up story on that, since, in my opinion, I felt it was a nothing more then a direct push to make a case for building a brand new stadium in thier hometown, Scranton. I want an opinion on this from a Wyoming Valley perspective. I still hope you guys do an indepth report on PNC Field

Our democracy cannot function like this. The KGB's labor in the 60s to create self-loathing and self-hatred worked. It destroyed our country and we are only now waking up to face it. In addition, don't you think that even if a McCain supporter heard it, he/she might just stay quiet about it and not come forward? Why is the conclusion always against the media? Why can't your point be something more logical, like - Maybe he was just saying McCain should kill him in the electoral college, like when someone says The Rays killed the Red Sox this post-season?

This is SOP for the left. Make up something, the press prints it as "fact", other left media report it over and over. (Remember all the false Palin stories?) When it is proven to be false, the MSM either doesn't report that fact or they bury the retraction where no one will see it. This scenerio is taken directly from the communist play book.

Where are you getting "no basis." The reporter says he heard it. Perhaps you are swayed by the article's headline, which doesn't accurately represent the evidence. The agent says he was "baffled" and that no agents heard the threat. That is quite different from calling he allegation "unfounded." I for one don't feel I'm in a position to reject the reporter's claims. There either hundreds or thousands of people a the rally and only 20 agents, apparently. There is no good reason to believe that someone could have said it without any agents hearing it.

This is what I hate about our media. They scream from the mountaintop an unconfirmed incident in order to encite their leftist base and to demonize McCain. Now that it has been proven false by Secret Service investigation, let's see how many retractions there are. There won't be.. Olbermann won't mention it either.. this is how the mainstream media works... Unleash a hit piece, then if wrong..ignore it like it never happened but the impact on less astute voters is dramatic. This is why Obama is winning every poll due to stuff like this. (well that and the fact that almost every poll is slanted Dem) such as the post-debate poll on CNN last night that showed Obama won 50something% to 30something% but the problem is that those sampled were 40%democrat and 30% Republican.. It's misleading and frustrating.

Of course it's true. A likely Pro-Obama newspaper puts one of it's reporters, also most likely Pro-Obama, and he goes out and says that he heard this "Kill Him" comment and runs a story on it. Of course he didn't see him. Otherwise someone would be able to look at security footage to see if there was someone like that at the rally. It's easier to say that you just heard the comment. So we have a reporter, a likely Obama supporter cause most of them are, saying he heard this and now he can run a story about republicans saying "I heard it myself". And if anyone tries to refute him, he just claims that he heard it, and there is no evidence to back him up, but there is also no evidence to refute his claim. A good way to spread lies and hate-mongering, because a story like this while most likely a lie, will create hate towards the republican party.

Why would the Secret Service induce mass panic by saying that, yes, indeed someone has been planning to kill Barack Obama and stated it at a rally in a fit of emotion? This would do nothing but make future rallies a scary place to be at. If there was a perpetrator who threatened the Senator's life, he is in Gitmo never to be heard of again. And, though I am not an expert, I would not be surprised if this was not the last expression of extreme hate towards a very divisive figure. Anyone who galvanizes people towards public threats of death is divisive. Ironic because he claims he will unite America. During the first debate, it was said that "it's kind of hard to reach across the aisle when you're so far left in the pew" or something to that effect. Words so true were never spoken.

All the other news outlets picked it up unquestioned because it is very easy for them to believe, because of their own bias, that the "redneck racists" attracted to the McCain/Palin campaign hold these views. However, they never attribute the insane views of those on the Daily Kos to Obama/Biden, even though high ranking democrats felt obligated to pay homage to the Daily Kos at its annual convention earlier this year. The possibility of hyperinflation will rise followed by collapse thus creating the need for a "new" but undervalued dollar again based only on the "good graces" of our government. On the other hand, you are in a crowd of people. You may hear something that was said that the person standing next to you could have missed. It happens to all of us be it a large crowd or two individuals in a room watching tv. We tend to get so bent out of shape over things that may mean alot to you and not that much to someone else. I pray that we all seek God first and formost. This world needs God so bad right now. For those who have a saving relationship with Jesus, we have been called to interceed. Let's stay in prayer! It works.

90% of the media is biased when it comes to the candidates. It's okay for Obama and his supporters to crack on Palin's gender and her children (illegal - due to being minors + sexist) McCain's age (discrimination on age), but as soon as it's a negative comment on Obama? They start crying like little babies. Obama has been using negative adds since day one and even on his own party (Hillary). Obama is a little girl and McCain walked all over Obama last night. The experience between the two was plain to see. Obama copied McCain's answers more than once. Obama is lost - ignorant - and a wuss! He says exactly what people want to hear. He'll be president even if he looses the election because the race-card will be passed out immediately!

Wait. It's the media's job to keep the government in check, and inform the citizenry of what's actually happening. Now, imagine if a Fox reporter said that he/she heard someone yell "kill him" at an Obama rally when referring to McCain or Palin. It would be more truthful - ever see some of the comments on websites, or on t-shirts worn by Obamabots? - but would the likes of Keith Olbermann report on it? Of course not. And, to top it off, do not expect to see a retraction from any of the media who reported this lie. I would not say the media is out to destroy America although they are certainly on Obama’s side. The historic appeal of having the first African American president elected and the potential coverage to result from it is just salivating for them. If the junior senator from Illinois is elected I believe this country will have a serious case of buyer’s remorse. “Tickle up economics” is a ridiculous concept, Tariffs and protectionism does not work, and a tax credit to the 38% of America’s who pays no taxes was once called welfare. But don’t speak ill of the “One”. That is racist.

I honestly can't stop laughing at these comments. It makes me shake my head that anyone trusts the media as the absolute truth. It's our responsibility to inform ourselves. Making a blanket statement that the media is liberal or favors Obama is ignorant. The secret service was not looking for the person who yelled it - they were merely looking for at least one person who HEARD it. True it is unlikely that the perpetrator would have spoken up, but other people in the audience would have no reason to lie to the secret service. Besides, when Obama and his media campaign workers (read MSN) spoke of this, they all suggested that it was a prevalent pattern of bad behaviour by McCain supporters at more than one rally. In fact, if it were even close to being prevalent enough to constitute any kind of threat, then I am sure that at least one secret service agent would have heard it. and where does a reporter get off reporting what seems at best to be an isolated incident, as a pattern of behaviour. I give way more credence to the secret service agents than I do to some kool-aid drinking reporter.

But instead of erring on the side of ensuring what he heard was true (I personally think he is a liar, but that is based on the complete biasness the media has shown themselves to have the past 20 years) like checking audio recordings or asking if someone else heard it, he printed it and made a buck and prompted his man O.

Everyone is missing the point. To liberals it makes no difference if it actually happened. They “feel” like this is something that someone in a Pro-Palin crowd would say. So one liberal lies and the rest swear to it (ala the Clinton administration) because it is what they need to believe. Using this manufactured “controversy” as a springboard, a liberal congressman attempted to draw links between McCain and Palin and domestic terrorists that bombed Black churches. Now if McCain’s political career had been launched by a fundraiser at one of said terrorist home’s and later McMain served on boards with him to form child education policy (ala Obama-Bill Ayers); then the congressman might have a valid point. But in a place and time when the media establishment is a virtual extension of the Obama campaign (because it makes them “feel” good I suppose), what benefits the campaign or diminishes the opposition is assumed to be true – even after being proven false.

It doesn't matter if it is founded or not. The effect that this lying "journalist" wanted was acheived. The damage is done. Liberals are not interested in truth or anything other than their emotions, feelings and deal in nothing but 10 second sound bites. The person filing the report was only interested in feeding the populace exactly what they wanted to hear, and having been fed, they had no interest in knowing whether or not it was true. Obama would have known that this was unfounded last night prior to his mentioning it during the debate, proving that he is also not interested in the truth, merely what ies it will take to get him in to usher in the new United Socialist Republic of America. God help those of us on the right when the new Brown (Blue) Shirts take to the streets and eliminate Conservative/Republican run businesses.

Bad enough you quote - and know the works of - Goebbels, you should at least spell his name right. And lastly... if the media is bankrupt (no need for "completely" and "utterly," as the work bankrupt covers it all), and you stopped believing their "lies," what are you even doing here at the Times Leader reading this? You sound like another BS artist to me. "The media is completely and utterly bankrupt. The reporter who made this claim should be fired and brought up on charges. He is a lier and he knows it. Josef Gobbells once said " If you tell a lie long enough it becomes the truth". I guess this is what the press is counting on. This is a great example of how the media controlls the public's perceptions. A "story" circulates through the national media with no verification of facts on the ground. When outsiders have to take a look the claim is found unsupported. Truth is that stories that run counter to thier preconcieved political bias receive plenty of skepticism, and those that fit get a pass. For example, the recent incident where the aspiring small business owner, "Joe the Plumber" confronts Obama over his tax plan. Suddenly it's extremly important for the media to find out if "Joe" really is a plumber, but not so vital to examine his concerns.

I heard from relatives in the area that were at the event that it did not happen and that the radio stations would not accept phone calls disputing the story. who and what is behind Obama that this corruption keeps happening? That is the question that scares me the most. Are we sheep being led to slaughter?

I'm glad The Times Leader is clearing this up. The Times Tribune thinks that they can irresponsibly print whatever they want with zero reprocussions. It's nice to have another newspaper in town that'll give us a real, unbiased veiw of news in our region. I know I will be reading The Times Leader Scranton edition from now on.

Fraudulently yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theater is a crime. Fraudulently reporting presidential threats for political gain isn't? That reporter should be made an example that America is fed up with such low tactics.

The number, quality, and anger displayed in this "comment" column speaks to the attitude of those who obviously oppose Obama, the target of many posts, when the reporter is probably the culprit.

if you really think about it people have rally's all over the world debating and you all know at least someone is gonna say something to offend someone but charged is out of the question unless he/she says that and them they try to attack but just shouting is speaking someones mind and yess it is totally uncalled for saying such a thing but if everyone said that then wouldnt the authority throw everyone behind bars?....
