NANTICOKE — City police are investigating the death of an infant.

Police were dispatched to the rear of 340 E. Noble St. at 9:19 a.m. Friday to investigate the death of a 2½-month-old boy, according to a news release that city police issued late Monday afternoon.

The boy was identified as Jaxon Eckrote.

Members of the city police department, Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office and Luzerne County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross conducted an autopsy on the infant at about 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation and toxicology reports, the news release said.

Neither District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis nor Coroner Bill Lisman would say if the death is considered suspicious. Both refused to release any information other than what was in the news release. Police Chief Bill Shultz did not return a call seeking additional comment.

However, police are asking anyone with information to call them at 570-735-2200 or the District Attorney’s Office at 570-825-16774.
