    Charles William Sick, 73, of Overton Road, Dushore, died Sunday at his
homeBorn March 5, 1922, in Dushore, he was the son of the late William P. and
Kathryn T. Donahue Sick.
   
He was a 1940 graduate of St. Basil’s High School. He attended Wyoming
Seminary, Kingston, in 1941, and was a 1944 graduate of Penn State University.
   
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving at the Central Pacific
Command from 1943 to 1945.
   
After returning home in 1945, he negotiated with J.R. Rohrbaugh and
purchased the Ben Franklin Store, Dushore, in 1946.
   
He married the former Lucille A. Merkle of Dushore on Jan. 17, 1949.
   
He and his wife later expanded and purchased the Ben Franklin Stores in
Mansfield and Towanda. They created the Fabricana Store and the Card & Gift
Shop in Mansfield and the Card Shop in Towanda. Along with his wife, he
operated Dot’s Hallmark, Towanda.
   
He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, its Holy
Name Society and its Cemetery Association. He also helped with many of St.
Basil’s Fouth of July picnics, bazaars and other church events.
   
He was a founding member of Dushore Industries Inc. and the Sullivan County
Industrial Development Authority. He and others cleaned, repaired and painted
several Dushore area factories to make them available for new job
opportunities and sought out manufacturers interested in coming to Sullivan
County.
   
He and his wife participated in the Bow Hunter’s Festival, where they ran
the souvenir stand and donated many hours of their time.
   
They filled the void of a community swimming pool by building a pool. It
has been used for more than 30 years by hundreds of community youngsters who
learned to swim by a certified swimming instructor.
   
He was an active member of the Dushore Lions Club for more than 30 years.
   
He was a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. He helped organize several
bloodmobiles and donated more than 11 gallons of blood.
   
He was formerly a director of the First National Bank of Dushore, which
became Northern Central Bank, and a corporate director of Northern Central
Bank, Williamsport.
   
He was also a former member of the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy;
the board of trustees of both Guthrie Health Care, Sayre, and the Williamsport
Community College, now the Pennsylvania College of Technology, a division of
Penn State University; the Sullivan County Tourist Bureau; the Endless
Mountains Association; the Pennsylvania State 4-H Board; the Board of Gen.
Sullivan Council; the Boy Scouts of America.
   
He was an active member of Loyalsock Post 996 American Legion, Dushore; the
Sullivan County Historical Society; the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce;
the Dushore Fire Company and Ambulance Association; the Sullivan County
Republican Party; the Eagles Mere Country Club.
   
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters, Sally Kahler, Hong Kong;
Susan Whitworth and Nancy Sick Barrington, both of Houston, Texas; a son,
Scott, Millville; nine grandchildren; a brother, Eugene, Kingston; a sister,
Jane Sick Dunfee, Sayre; several nieces and nephews.
   
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Basil’s
Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin, his pastor, officiating.
   
Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery.
   
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the P. Dean Homer
Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
   
A graveside military service will be accorded by members of Loyalsock Post
996 American Legion. The members will pass in review at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home.
