DER seeks court extension
The state Department of Environmental Resources has asked for another court
extension in its financial negotiations with the West Side Landfill Authority.

DER sent a request Friday to Commonwealth Court Judge James Doyle for
another 60 days, spokesman Mark Carmon said.

The authority’s 12 member municipalities and DER are debating how much each
municipality will pay of the estimated $6.7 million to close the 18-acre
Plymouth Township landfill. The authority is under a court order to close by
November 1994.

Meeting to address federal regulations on dry cleaning

A meeting to discuss new federal regulations that affect the dry cleaning
industry has been scheduled for Thursday at Wilkes University.

The meeting, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Arnaud C. Marts Center on South
Franklin Street, is sponsored by the state Department of Environmental
Resources and the Pennsylvania Dry Cleaners and Launderers Association.

The federal regulations establish a national emission standard for
perchloroethylene, commonly called “perc,” a cleaning solvent used by dry
cleaners.

The new standard requires these businesses to submit completed forms to the
federal Environmental Protection Agency by Dec. 20. The early deadline for the
forms, which are being mailed to dry cleaners by the EPA, has raised concerns
within the industry.

DER, the Commerce Department and the dry cleaners association will provide
information and assistance in filling out the forms at the meeting.

For more information, call Carol Memberg of the dry cleaners association at
215-848-3438.
