‘King’s Dream’ comes to Misericordia

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Misericordia University is presenting “King’s Dream,’’ by Key Arts Productions at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall on campus. The 45-minute event is open free to the public.

“King’s Dream’’ is a dynamic live performance ensemble that specializes in innovative multimedia to offer a rousing tribute to the slain civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. The presentation comes alive with images, singers and songs that capture the spirit of the American civil rights movement.

Audience members are encouraged to sing along to moving renditions of the songs that were sung by protesters in jail cells, during marches and in mass church meetings. Song include the gospel iconic hymn, “Amazing Grace,’’ freedom songs “We Shall Overcome’’ and “Lift Every Voice and Sing’’ and Bob Dylan’s classic “Blowin’ in the Wind,’’ Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On’’ and other memorable tunes that signified the period.

The era also is recalled with captivating big screen video images and archival film that tell the story of the life and teachings of the preeminent human right activist of the 20th century, as well as courageous individuals like Rosa Parks, the Arkansas Nine, and the Freedom Fighters.

Thought-provoking live commentary offered throughout the production tells the story of the turbulent 1960s – a time in American history that was dramatic, powerful and at points painful. The challenges of the Vietnam War, the political tests, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the final signing of the Civil Rights Act by President Lyndon B. Johnson, are relived in the “King’s Dream’’ program.
