JACKSON TWP. – An emergency holding tank ordinance was approved on Tuesday night while a grant will be sought for future road projects.
After working closely with the Dallas Area Municipal Authority, attorney Jeffery Malak presented an ordinance to the township supervisors governing the use of temporary septic tanks. Malak said temporary holding tanks are to be used when a septic system fails to operate correctly.
“The holding tanks are a temporary solution while a permanent solution is sought.” he said.
The ordinance states that a resident in need of a temporary holding tank must receive a permit from the township and the state Department of Environmental Protection. The holding tanks and permits expire in three years.
Reading from the ordinance, Malak said a temporary holding tank must be regularly pumped out and maintained. A fee of $5,000, payable by a resident, will be held in a township escrow account in case the township needs to step in to maintain the tank, Malak said.
Through his research, Malak said the ordinance is consistent with other surrounding municipalities.
Looking toward next year, Supervisor Chairman John Wilkes Jr. announce the township will be working with the Luzerne Conservation District to apply for the Dirt and Gravel grant for 2010 projects.
At this time, Wilkes said he cannot comment on how much money is being applied for or what roads are being looked at. He said those decisions will be determined after a meeting with the Luzerne Conservation District.
The next supervisors meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 in the municipal building.
