The Newton Math Contest was recently held at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. The contest was started in Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1989 by Dr. Mohammad Nouri and has continued with the help of many local teachers in the Wilkes-Barre Area. Students from local area high schools competed in a day of rigorous mathematics. The test consisted of two parts, an individual test in the morning and a team competition in the afternoon. The individual test winners were: Peter Kulick, Scranton Prep, first place; Miles Hammond, Meyers, and Reed Pinterch, Berwick, second place; and Spencer Yacuboski, Berwick, third place. The winners of the team portion were: Josh Daugherty, Dylan Gearinger, Reed Pinterch, Spencer Yacuboski, Berwick High School, first place; Garard Ferrano, Gokulan Gnanendran, David Horvath, Chris O’Brien, Scranton Prep, second place; and Juliano Iukovic, Asa Miller, Pranjal Satija, Eric Shaw, Hazleton Area, third place. King’s College hosted the contest with the help of the organizing committee from Wilkes-Barre Area School District.
