WVW students win awards at journalism conference

Journalism students from Wyoming Valley West High School recently attended the 13th annual Tom Bigler Conference at Wilkes University. The school’s paper, West Side Story, won the Overall Excellence Award. Individual awards were presented to Summer McDonnell for Young Journalist of the Year, feature photography and feature writing; Nathan Gurtis for sports writing, opinion writing and news writing; and Emily Luff and Wesley Pashinski for newspaper layout. Cathy Podolak is the journalism teacher and newspaper and yearbook adviser at the high school. At the event, from left, first row, are Luff, Pashinski, McDonnell and Gurtis.
