Seaman James Zendarski, a boatswain’s mate from Nanticoke, and 2012 graduate of Greater Nanticoke Area High School, is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Somerset (LPD 25). The USS Somerset is named in commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The name honors the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93. Approximately 22 tons of steel from a crane that stood near Flight 93’s crash site was used to construct the Somerset’s bow stem. The San Diego-based ship is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, protecting and defending America on the world’s oceans.
Navy Seaman Travis A. Moose, son of Wayne Moose, Freeland, and Barbara Baranko, Beaver Meadows, recently reported for duty at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. Moose is a 2008 graduate of Hazleton Area High School.
