The local Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) recently held its 42nd annual recognition luncheon at the Genetti Hotel and Conference Center, Wilkes-Barre. FGP is sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging for Luzerne/Wyoming Counties and is federally funded by the Corporation for National Service. Foster Grandparents are individuals age 55 or older that have a limited income and a desire to work with children. For 20 hours per week of service they are entitled to many benefits including monetary compensation. Keynote speaker was the Rev. Shawn Walker, pastor, First United Church of Wilkes-Barre. Walker spoke of grandparents and their influence on children. The theme of the luncheon was ‘Foster Grandparents are Shining Starts.’ Each Foster Grandparent received a canvas bag with a Shining Stars insignia and a Walmart gift card. Special awards were presented to individuals who have served for five, 10, 15 and 20 years. New members are needed.
