KINGSTON — Starting January, residents in this community will help their
town pay the trash bill.

Under a new program, residents will be required to buy 10 special garbage
bags for $2.50 from stores in the municipality.

“If the trash is in any other bag, it won’t be picked up,” said Mayor Frank
Sorochak. “It’ll be left there.”

The municipality expects to make about $150,000 from bag sales and will put
that toward the $200,000 annual landfill tipping fee, Sorochak said.

The new program also is being implemented to curb illegal dumping by
non-residents who deposit bags of garbage on borough streets.

“We’ve had arrests that have been made and people who’ve been fined $300
who’ve been caught” dumping in town, Sorochak said.

Residents now purchase bags of their choice, like Hefty, and do not pay for
trash collection. The new bags will be gray with maroon imprints of the town
logo and recycling program.

Kingston will pay Dyco International Inc. in Berwick $173,750 for 1.2
million, 30-gallon bags, enough for a year. Dyco will deliver the bags only to
Kingston stores, which have yet to be determined.

Sorochak said most of the people he has talked with support the new
program.

“People have been to council meetings,” he said. “Nobody has stood up and
said `Hey, why do you have to do it?'”

When residents purchase the new bags, they must present identification,
like a driver’s license, to prove residency in Kingston, he said.

Residents can still pack yard waste in bags of their choice.

Trash is collected about three times a week in the municipality, and
there’s an eight-bag limit.
