A traditionally Democratic borough, West Wyoming voted three candidates on
the Republican ticket to four-year terms on council.

“The (primary) election was close,” said John Appel, who was elected with
Rocco Yanora and Rena Tofani based on an unofficial count.. “People just
wanted change.”
Yanora led all candidates, followed by Tofani and Appel, then Democrats
Richard Yarosavich Sr., Frank Skilonger and Frank Pugliese Jr.

Anthony Verdine was the only victorious Democrat, edging Republican Tom
McGovern for a two-year term on council. Democrat Robert Connors ran unopposed
as tax collector, a position he has held since January 1998.

“We’re disappointed we all didn’t get in,” Appel said. “That’s what we
wanted, to go in as a team.”

Appel has resided in West Wyoming for the past 10 years. He is a graduate
of Pittston Area High School and attended the University of Scranton and
Luzerne County Community College. He was previously employed by Specialty
Records and ACME Markets.

Yanora graduated from GAR High School as well as Stonehill College and the
University of Scranton. He is a former teacher in the Wyoming Area School
District.

A lifelong resident, Tofani worked in the garment industry for 44 years
until her retirement in 1989 and is a founding member of Concerned Citizens of
West Wyoming.

Verdine has lived and operated A&S Market in West Wyoming for 38 years, and
was employed by the Wyoming Area School District as a bus driver. –
