SUGARLOAF TWP. – Police are investigating a burglary at the Kmart at Laurel Mall around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Someone entered the store by smashing two sets of doors, according to state police at Hazleton. Once inside, police said jewelry from several display cases was stolen.

An inventory conducted by store personnel estimated several thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was stolen, police said. Police are reviewing store surveillance videos.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hazleton barracks at 459-3890.

PITTSTON – A city man was arraigned on charges he allegedly assaulted his wife at their home late Tuesday night.

Nicholas Martinez, 27, of 70 Vine St., was charged Thursday with five counts of simple assault and one count each of terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment, according to court records. He was released on $10,000 unsecured bail.

Police alleged Martinez beat up his wife, Nicole Martinez, after an argument at their Vine Street home.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a call at 10:30 p.m. for a report of an assault victim.

Nicole Martinez told police she was beat up by her husband, who accused her of cheating.

WILKES-BARRE – City police reported the following:

Police said someone stole 74-year-old Regina Mercincavage’s 2007 Hyundai, bearing Pennsylvania license plate GBZ 0746, from 79 N. Sherman St. on Monday afternoon.

• Chadd Briggs, 24, of Wapwallopen, was arrested on a warrant for allegedly resisting arrest near Main Street around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

• Police said a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were found with weapons at the Milford E. Barnes School, South Franklin Street, on Wednesday. Police said the boy had a knife and the girl had an unloaded pellet gun.
