Police Blotter

LEHMAN TWP. – A Dallas man died Saturday in a two-vehicle crash at 7:42 a.m.

Police said 56-year-old Robert J. Sheridan, of 65 Oak Drive, was proceeding through the intersection at Idetown Road and Route 118 when a Ford F150 pick-up truck struck Sheridan’s Chevrolet Cavalier in the driver’s side door.

The Ford, operated by Mark F. Benscoter, 47, of Dallas, was traveling north on Route 118 at the time of the collision, police said.

Benscoter was treated at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Charges will not be filed at this time, police said.

WILKES-BARRE - Police were called to a shooting late Saturday night in a residential area of John street and North Pennsylvania Avenue. One man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound, police said.

A woman interviewed by officers reported hearing a gunshot fired as she was walking down the street.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred about 11:05 p.m.

WILKES-BARRE - Police are investigating a report of an attempted robbery in South Wilkes-Barre around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

A 23-year-old city woman told police she was walking to work in the area of 277 S. River St. when she was approached by three young black males described as in their early to mid-teens, police said.

One of the males pointed a silver firearm at her, according to police, and told her to empty her pockets. The victim said she knew the gun wasn’t real and refused to do what she was told.

The victim was then struck in the neck with the gun before the males fled on foot, police said.

WILKES-BARRE – City police reported the following incidents:

Officers encountered Charles Evans, 39, of West Pittston, at 94 S. Pennsylvania Ave., allegedly acting in a disorderly manner at 2:35 p.m. Friday. Police said Evans disregarded orders to desist.

During his arrest, police said Evans kicked Officer Ken Jones in the head and groin, and then bit Officer Len Gutkowski in the arm. Necessary force was used to restrain him, police said.

Evans will be charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

A woman reported around 6:20 p.m. Thursday that someone entered her vehicle and removed property valued at $140 in the Kirby Park parking lot.

Police said Christopher Daum, of Wilkes-Barre, operator of a bicycle, veered in front of a Chevrolet convertible, driven by Sandra Browning, of Plains Township, striking the vehicle on the passenger side on Route 309.

Daum was treated on scene for minor abrasions to the legs and arms, police said.

An unknown woman removed 99 cents worth of merchandise from an establishment on Hanover Street around 5:55 p.m. Thursday, police said.

• Samantha Bonga, of Merrick, N.Y., reported on Thursday someone stole prescription medication from her King’s College dorm room at Essef Hall, North Main Street, police said.

• Police said Janeann Frail, 53, of Wilkes-Barre, is facing a summary charge of disorderly conduct after a road rage incident on South Main Street at 4:52 p.m. Thursday. A woman reported Frail, driving a Volkswagen, pulled from a parking space nearly colliding with her vehicle.

The woman claimed Frail yelled and made a gesture and followed her, police said.

• No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle crash at East Northampton and South Washington streets Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said a female teen from Dallas, driving a 2001 Pontiac, was traveling east on East Northampton Street when she struck a 2002 Subaru, driven by Sarah E. Hostrander, of Williamsport, at about 4:32 p.m.

The teen told police she believed she had a green light. A witness told police Hostrander had the green light in her favor, police said.

AVOCA – Police on Friday arrested 19-year-old Lindsey Rydzfski of Wilkes-Barre for failing to appear last month in court for criminal mischief charges.

Rydzfski’s vehicle was traveling on William Street when it was stopped for a traffic violation, according to Avoca police Chief David M. Homschek. Rydzfski is being held at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail.

HAZLETON – State police at Hazleton reported the following incidents:

An unknown suspect entered a residence at 1047 Sandy Valley Road, Foster Township, and removed several items including flat screen TVs between 10 a.m. April 12 and 5 p.m. Friday.

Someone went on a front porch at 817 Hobbie Road, Hollenback Township, and stole a brown and black Winchester shotgun between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hazleton barracks at 459-3890.

UNION TWP. – State police at Shickshinny reported that someone removed tools and a spotlight from a 38-year-old man’s truck while it was parked on Hontz Road between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on April 23.

BUTLER TWP. – Township police reported the following:

• Police said a water reserve tank was stolen during a burglary at a residence in the 1000 block of St. Johns Road sometime from April 25 and May 3.

• Police said they are investigating a prowler lurking near homes on St. Johns Road at night and early morning. A 64-year-old male said he found someone outside his residence at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. A 90-year-old woman told police someone was at her front door at about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

• Police said Levern Johnson, 19, of Washington, D.C., was cited with two counts of criminal mischief for damaging items in his dorm room at the Keystone Job Corps Center on Sunday.

• A 53-year old man from Sand Springs Drive reported recently someone used his credit card to purchase items without his knowledge, police said.

• A Joy Lane resident reported on Sunday someone damaged her property, police said.

• A 60-year-old woman from North Hunter Highway recently reported someone used her credit card to purchase items without her knowledge, police said.

• Police said several vending machines at Highacres Commons, Faith Drive, were recently found damaged.

LUZERNE COUNTY – State police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement conducted age compliance checks at licensed establishments on Thursday night. The checks consist of using supervised underage buyers in an attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages.

Six licensed establishments were checked, two were noncompliant in that they served the underage buyer alcoholic beverages.

The four establishments that did not serve the underage buyer were Alveria Donahue, owner of Donahue’s Hourglass, Wilkes-Barre; The Oasis Inn, Wilkes-Barre; Four G. Corporation, owner of Cabaret, Kingston; and CFM-NEPA, LLC., Pittston.
