HAZLETON – State police are seeking information related to an apartment building fire that sent residents jumping from second-floor windows and left one victim unconscious and in need of rescue.
The Pennsylvania State Police Troop N Fire Marshal Unit has found that a blaze just after midnight on Wednesday at 120 W. Broad St. was intentionally set within a common hallway on the second floor outside Apartment No. 5, state police said.
Anyone with information should call the state police Fire marshal Unit at 459-3890 or the Hazleton Police Department at 459-4940.
MAHANOY TWP. – Derek Fulton, 23, of West Hazleton, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving while traveling through a sobriety checkpoint on state Route 1008, state police in Frackville said.
WILKES-BARRE - The following incidents were reported by city police:
• Jamie Compton, 23, reported at 1:27 p.m. Thursday an unknown person in a silver van threatened her life. Compton was driving on Blackman Street when an unknown person in a silver van was following her. The person pulled up alongside Compton and pulled out a knife before saying did she want to get hurt. The incident is under investigation.
• Sherel McNeil of Larksville was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance at 12:13 a.m. Friday after crashing her vehicle into a utility pole in the 400 block of Carey Avenue. The crash caused the South Wilkes-Barre neighborhood to lose power for a couple of hours.
• Richard Peters of Scranton’s McCarthy cabs reported a theft of services at 4:07 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of Hazle Street. Peters said he picked up a man at 610 Kressler Court in Scranton and was asked to drive to 150 Hazle St in Wilkes-Barre. When they arrived in Wilkes-Barre, the man told Peters to stop at 189 Hazle St. The passenger exited the cab and then fled on foot without paying.
• Matt Douglas’ 2004 Suzuki motorcycle was stolen from Spruce Street about 3:47 a.m. Friday. Douglas’ girlfriend heard a loud bang from outside her building that woke her up. When she looked outside she saw a light-colored pickup. By the time she got downstairs, the motorcycle was gone.
• Eric Bayer, 21, of Wilkes-Barre, was arrested at 2:29 a.m. Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence after being in a wreck at the corner of Blackman and South Main Street.
• Dolores Borowski reported at 10 a.m. Thursday someone smashed her car windshield and scuffed the front bumper of her vehicle while it was parked in the 100 block of North Fulton Street.
• Kenneth Barnes was arrested at 11:23 a.m. Friday on Sherman Street on suspicion of public drunkenness after police received a call about someone lying on a sidewalk.
• Joshua Wall was arrested at 3:20 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence after he lost control of his vehicle before hitting a utility pole near 428 Hazle Street. Wall wasn’t injured. The car had to be towed from the scene.
• Mark Royer of West Pittston reported at 1:01 a.m. Saturday someone broke into his home on 528 N. Franklin and destroyed the carpet, spilled paint and defaced cabinets.
• Manuel Rosario of South Welles Street reported at 2:10 a.m. Saturday that someone broke into his home, stole a desktop computer and threw items around the home. Rosario later found a .22 caliber Ruger revolver in his front yard. Rosario said he didn’t own the gun.
• David Mamola, 51, was cited at 1:22 p.m. Friday with disorderly conduct after police received a call for a man urinating on a building.
