Nibali wins Tirreno ahead of Froome, Contador

SAN BENEDETTO DEL TRONTO, Italy — Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali has defended his title in the Tirreno-Adriatico race Tuesday, finishing 23 seconds ahead of Tour de France runner-up Chris Froome.


Alberto Contador was third overall, 52 seconds back. World champion Tony Martin, who rides for Omega Pharma-Quick Step, won the 5.7-mile time trial in 10 minutes, 25 seconds.


Nibali, who rides for Astana, was 12th in the time trial and Froome was sixth.
