    Charles H. Hartley, 74, of Rose Street, Forty Fort, died Monday in
Geisinger
   
Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains TownshipBorn in Wilkes-Barre, he was
the son of the late Henry G. and Jessie Symons Hartley. He was a graduate of
Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
   
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army Engineers in the
Asiatic and Pacific theaters.
   
He had been employed in the silk industry in Parsons for several years. He
was associated for many years with the Sordoni Construction Company, Forty
Fort. Prior to retiring, he had been employed by the Commonwealth Telephone
Company, Dallas.
   
He was a member of the East End Primitive Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre;
Joseph E. Conlon Post 558, American Legion, Plains Township; a member and past
commander of Anthracite Post 283, VFW, Kingston.
   
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Esther K. Schwartz, in April
1993.
   
He and his wife, the former Ruth Reese, were married 47 years.
   
Surviving are a son, John H., Drums; brother, Alan R., Bethlehem; sisters,
Mrs. Elmer (Lois) Reese, Savannah, Ga.; Mrs. Joan H. Bottley, Wilkes-Barre;
two grandchildren.
   
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral
Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Marty Garms, pastor, of the
East End Primitive Methodist Church, officiating.
   
Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton.
   
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
