ABOUT LEROY- He is a three-year letterman and a two-year starter for the
Dawgs at defensive back. Prior to being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor,
Leroy played through a separated shoulder, a broken finger and a bruised
biceps muscle. To date, the only game he’s missed in the last three years was
this year’s Pottsville game on Friday, Sept. 12. His brother, John, is a
junior member of the football team who plays defensive back. “The week Leroy
missed, his brother was lost. It’s his big brother and he idolizes him,” Tina
Spencer said.

Spencer isn’t the first player George Curry has coached to have a brain
tumor discovered while playing football. Mike Vezendy, a 1980 Berwick
graduate, earned a scholarship to the University of Maryland as a wide
receiver. After initially being diagnosed locally with epilepsy and taking
medication to control the seizures, Vezendy was given an MRI while at
Maryland. A benign brain tumor the size of a grapefruit was discovered. The
surgery was successful.
