BROOKLINE, Mass. — It wasn’t one shot that turned Brandon Matthews’ Round of 32 matchup with Gavin Green. It was two.
Matthews needed two shots on the 623-yard, par-5 12th hole to reach the green and leave his opponent scrambling to not lose the hole. Matthews won the hole easily and went on to take a 4-and-3 victory over Green in the Round of 32 at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Matthews hit his drive 358 yards on the hole, more than 80 yards beyond Green’s tee shot. Matthews’ second shot left him about 25 feet to the pin.
The Pittston Area graduate trailed for just one hole in the match after dropping hole No. 2 to Green. He leveled the match on the third hole, putting his approach from 160 yards just 6 feet from the hole.
Matthews won hole Nos. 4-5 to go 2-up, but Green squared the match at the turn.
The Temple golfer won the 10th hole with a soft 20-foot downhill putt with a mild break, then extended his lead on the 12th. From there, Matthews won the 13th and 14th to go 4-up with four holes to play. A nifty 17-foot par putt on No. 15 clinched the match and advanced to the Round of 16 later Thursday afternoon.
