One day after knocking out the top seeds, North Pocono’s Zac Lehman and his partner Angie Kluss edged Bob Cullen and Marion Reese 6-7(7), 7-6(8), (10-7) to win the Scranton Tennis Club Mixed Doubles Championship. Lehman’s serve and all-court game paired with Kluss’ baseline play enabled them to pull off the upset win over the defending champions.
The new champions had a tough road to the final, defeating three strong challengers along the way, including a 6-7(6), 7-6(6), (10-8) win over top-seeded Joe McNulty and Joan MacDerment in the semifinals. McNulty and MacDerment won the tournament a number of times in the past. In the other semifinal Cullen and Reese had a somewhat easier time in defeating Rich Mahon and Kathleen McKenna 6-2, 6-1.
A total of 15 teams participated. John Weiss and Burt Reese were the tournament directors.
