County seeking security job applicants

The position is vacant due to the retirement of acting director Basil Soroka.

Applications for Luzerne County government’s security chief position are due by 4 p.m. on July 9, according to an online job posting.

The position, which pays $25,000 to $35,000, is vacant because acting security director Basil Soroka is retiring in August.

Applicants must have at least five years of experience in security, law enforcement, military police or a similar environment. A minimum of two years of experience supervising workers who handle security or law enforcement duties is also required.

A high school diploma is required, and an associate degree is preferred. Act 120 police training is also preferred but not required.

The county also wants applicants with computer proficiency, an understanding of basic finance and administration, a track record as an effective manager and excellent communication and motivational skills, the posting says.

Other requirements: the ability to stay composed under stress and to establish order in difficult or chaotic situations.

County officials plan to hire a new security director in August.

County Commissioner Chairwoman Maryanne Petrilla said an administrative team will screen all applications and recommend the top three to be interviewed by the commissioners.

The screening committee will include county Chief Clerk/Manager Doug Pape and county Human Resources Director Andrew Check.

The complete job posting may be viewed on the county website at www.luzernecounty.org under the “career opportunities” category.

Soroka has been overseeing security since 2006, when former director Richard Simonson was severely injured after being struck by a vehicle in front of the courthouse.
